A Banquet of Love (Song 2:4)

Picture of a table set with wine

When the hour had come…Jesus said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you…” – Luke 22:14-15

Recently my husband and I have been sharing a weekly “communion” meal together. We use this set-apart time as a way of remembering Jesus’ life and death in the picture of a shared glass of wine, some bread, and a simple meal of soup or stew. It’s a little awkward still, as we try to make it meaningful and special. But it’s always a sweet time to me, and during the week I find myself eagerly looking forward to doing it again.

It doesn’t compare, however, to the longing that Jesus has to commune with us, in our hearts. He brings us there, and invites us to feast on Him. In Song of Songs 2:4, it says:

A POPPY IN THE PRICKERS

Picture of the poppy I saw in my hedgerow

Well hello there,” I whispered, gently touching the paper-like head that balanced precariously atop a long, skinny stem, “I certainly did not expect to see something like you in here.”

It seemed to nod, the bright splash of red peeking out of the thicket in my hedgerow. A poppy. A single, lone poppy. How in the world did it get here?

In a neighbor’s yard there is a flower garden with poppies, but with the distance and obstacles in-between, it seemed unlikely a seed blew this far. Maybe it was carried by a bird, or got caught on the fur of a stray cat?

More importantly though, how did it grow in such a hostile environment?

The Bed of Heaven (Song 1:16-17)

Picture of a green bed of plants

When I was a little girl I had a hobby horse, and remember spending countless hours riding and grooming it. Later in life when riding a real horse for the first time, a strong déjà vu feeling of my pretend horse came flooding back. It’s hard to describe, but sitting on the back of the reality, I felt like I had been there before, and it brought an exhilarating, childlike joy to my ride.

All this came to mind on a certain trip, in which I could not escape an adventurous sense that its moments were once played out in the history of the Bible somewhere. What exactly I did not know, but it felt as if something from the past was merging with the present, forming a new and higher reality.

Hopefully I haven’t lost anyone. It’s actually an experience that, for me, helped unlock something in this next portion of the Song…

Precious Myrrh Between My Breasts (Song 1:13)

Pic of Woman holding a locket close to her heart

My beloved is like a pouch of myrrh that rests between my breasts.– Song 1:13.

Anna,

I am speaking to you today, a fictional daughter, who has a name that’s dear to my heart. My Mom always thought it’d be nice to be called Anna. If she could change her name. So precious Anna, draw close. I have something to show you. It’s something I hope you can also smell.

See it here? This small, tightly-bound satchel hanging between my breasts? It’s called “Myrrh.” Go ahead, open it. The crystals are beautiful in color, aren’t they? Some call them “tears.” And for good reason.

I’ll try to be brief…

More on Nard – That Explains a Lot!

Caravaggio - The Crowning with Thorns, 1603

When the woman poured the alabaster box of nard (or spikenard) on Jesus, before His death, there was something else going on behind the scenes. And once “smelled” in the Spirit — It explains in no uncertain terms how Jesus could endure all the suffering that He did.

So with that brief intro, I really hope you will listen to this powerful audio that shares a certain detail in this story that will bless your socks off, (and hopefully more!) and bring a sweeter depth to your relationship to the living Christ.

It’s by Jay Ferris, only 6 minutes long, and clipped out from a longer conference talk. En-JOY!

He Brought Me Into His Chamber! (Song 1:4)

Bed Chamber with Lattice windows

The humility of the heart cry, “Draw me!” (Song 1:4) is one that is irresistible to God. Pray it often! Pray it with sincerity!

My experience is that you will pray it when you are desperate. You will pray it when you get a genuine glimpse of Christ’s beauty or smell His fragrance. And you …

There She Stands – Faced With The Bittersweetness Of Myrrh (Song 1:3)

Bottle of Anointing Oil with Myrrh

After violently pushing through competing lovers and loves, the Shulamite is finally in a place where she could be close enough to Solomon to be kissed by Him. It’s all she wants. She knows from experience that His expressions of love bring her joy and satisfaction, more than the best wine can ever do.

But first, she is instantly overwhelmed with Solomon’s fragrance. It is an anointing cologne that the king wears that is unique to him, made up of costly spices.

She breathes it in deeply, memorizing each of its bold, yet subtle nuances. One of the spices she recognizes is Myrrh. It fills her with emotions. Memories of her father’s death. And memories of King David’s death.

Joy Unspeakable and the Discovery of a “Chiasm”

It’s been awhile since writing plainly about the Song of Songs, but lately I’ve been studying it again as much as possible, and honestly, this book never ceases to light a fire in my spiritual life.  It’s like nothing else on the planet. :-)

Here’s just a little something to share…(Well, actually it’s a bit lengthy, …
