Hello From The Golden Rods

Here in the Northeast US, entering a gate between the seasons of summer and fall, the “Golden Rods” are in full bloom. A field of these lowly “weeds” have been soaking in the warm rays of the sun for as long as they’ve been given time. Now with thankful hearts, they stretch up their full, yellow hands and wave them with every breeze.

I took the below picture on …

An Ocean’s Call to a Focused Life

I was at the ocean recently, which was a rare treat. As I lay on the sand, soaking in the sun, I noted all the sounds in the air: Murmurs of voices and shouts of playing children. Seagulls. The music from someone’s speaker. A plane overhead. But it was the sound of the waves …

Perfect Timing (A Look at Song 2:7, 3:5, 8:4)

pic of man holding a time piece

Recently I read how bananas are picked green, and on route to the grocery stores are artificially gassed to ripen up. And because of this, they lack in nutritional value. It makes me think of our human tendency to manipulate results, and not wait for God’s perfect timing.

“I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.” – Song of Songs 2:7

This is an important verse in The Song. It is mentioned three times, (2:7, 3:5, 8:4) and always in similar contexts. Admittedly, it took me awhile for the meaning to sink in, partly I think, because …

A Run-in With A Buck!

Majestic buck

My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag – Song 2:9

When running on our quiet, seasonal road, I was startled by a huge buck that suddenly jumped in front of me. He had a massive rack on his head. I must have startled him too, as he quickly turned direction to run ahead of me, his hooves spraying dirt and rocks. He then found an opening in the hedgerow and with one huge, graceful leap, bounded off into the woods.

I stopped and grabbed my heart…

The Embraced Life (Song of Songs 2:6)

His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me, Song 2:6

Such eye-candy, isn’t it, the embrace of verse 6? It feels like there’s no getting around it. Or out from under it. The lover has his bride locked down in love! She is hemmed in, or encircled, as the Psalmist said of himself. (Psalm 139:5)

I always admired my Dad’s arms. Sometimes over-protective, but mostly kind, safe, and strong. They come to mind now when…

Lovesickness, and its Cure (Song 2:5)

Song of Songs 2:5

Overwhelmed with bliss are all
who will entwine their hearts in him, Isaiah 30:18 (TPT)

A brother shared with me about a recent experience, of spending an entire week in the intimate presence of God. Every day, through long, intense hours, he was getting revelations poured into him. It was, as he said, “powerful and humbling,” but in the end, he felt spent.

What he described is something I greatly covet. I’ve had times of this, so can relate, but they don’t happen as often as I’d like. I’m blessed more often by…

The Banquet Continues

As an addendum to the last post that connects Song 2:4’s “wine bar” to the “upper room” of the Last Supper, I’d like to share this short, yet lovely piece by Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) that connects it to the “upper room” of Pentecost!

Something I believe the Spirit revealed to me recently, is that there are many “spices” that make up the recipe of spiritually understanding the Song of Songs. Each spice adds its own uniqueness, and some spices are for a specific season. But each person’s part in this “recipe,” if true and fresh, will cause us to hunger and thirst for more of Christ, who is the completion of ALL the parts.

I hope to share more of these “spices” in the days to come.

Meanwhile – here is the one by Bernard.

A Banquet of Love (Song 2:4)

Picture of a table set with wine

When the hour had come…Jesus said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you…” – Luke 22:14-15

Recently my husband and I have been sharing a weekly “communion” meal together. We use this set-apart time as a way of remembering Jesus’ life and death in the picture of a shared glass of wine, some bread, and a simple meal of soup or stew. It’s a little awkward still, as we try to make it meaningful and special. But it’s always a sweet time to me, and during the week I find myself eagerly looking forward to doing it again.

It doesn’t compare, however, to the longing that Jesus has to commune with us, in our hearts. He brings us there, and invites us to feast on Him. In Song of Songs 2:4, it says:
