THE SONG – By Guest Author Cheryl McGrath

Listen, be still! Can you hear it? A song carried by the Wind. Such a yearning, longing, indescribable sound. Rising Heavenward. Now soft and barely discernible, now louder, clearer, lifting and falling like waves on the sea. There never was such a sound heard through all the ages this earth has known. You won’t hear …

A Hidden Author in the Song of Songs (Song 1:1)

The second part of verse 1 mentions Solomon, and depending on the translation, implies that he is the author. At least this is what has been commonly accepted throughout history. Clearly, having King Solomon’s name in the beginning section helped to get the Song of Songs accepted into the the biblical ‘canon,’ despite the book’s more provocative content.

But is there another aspect to authorship here? What about the woman in the Song? What role did SHE play?

Look at these amazing points:

A Word To The “Who Remnant” – Song 1:1

The Song Returns Us To The Who Of Our Spiritual Beginnings

What is YOUR experience with the Song of Songs?

I believe anyone starting off on a journey of faith knows, deep down, that the “Song” is uniquely special and useful for their spiritual life. But unfortunately most don’t have the tools to properly understand it. When I was a young girl, I remember reading the Song in secret, and how it ignited desires in me for what was spiritually possible in my love-relationship with Christ. But being raised in a strict religious environment, I didn’t have a mature place to talk about the details of sex, let alone a book like the Song of Songs. So it was largely something that I “put on a back burner,” while meanwhile pursuing a more intellectual and dispassionate approach to studying the Bible.

That is, until…

‘They Serve as Shadows’ ~ An Introduction to the Characters in the Song of Songs

There's the Shadow, and Then There's the Reality

What do I mean by saying the characters in the Song of Songs are “shadows?” It means that the two main people in the Song, although historically real, were living out a prophetic purpose bigger than themselves. Certain details of their lives were unfolding to become signposts to represent and reveal a spiritual reality that was to follow in Christ. To this day, we can read their creative expression of passionate love in the Song, but when divine light is cast upon it, we can suddenly see!  We see the Lover who has loved us from before time, fully embodying all that the mere shadow can only vaguely convey.

So let’s get into a brief introduction to these characters in the Song. It might not be necessary for those who are already familiar with the book, but right now it will help establish consistent names that we’ll use in the upcoming study.

Here goes…

On the Road, to Understanding the Song of Songs

One Way to Understanding the Song of Songs

Look for books, websites, or videos on the Song of Songs, and it will overwhelm you. It’s shocking how much is out there! Everything from marriage sex manuals, all the way to more complex, ‘mystical’ interpretations that are hard to wrap one’s head, let alone one’s heart around.

Instantly one realizes that what needs to be sought in earnest is God’s voice about the Song.

But how do we understand God’s Voice in the Song of Solomon – a challenging book that does not even mention God directly? Or “doctrine?” And that is dripping with sexual innuendos?

Ahhh, that is exactly the adventure we are about to embark on!

For starters ….

Joy Unspeakable and the Discovery of a “Chiasm”

It’s been awhile since writing plainly about the Song of Songs, but lately I’ve been studying it again as much as possible, and honestly, this book never ceases to light a fire in my spiritual life.  It’s like nothing else on the planet. :-)

Here’s just a little something to share…(Well, actually it’s a bit lengthy, …

House of Peace or House of Cards?

King David, Solomon’s father, was said to be a man “after God’s own heart.” Not so much after His mind, His purpose, His plans, but His heart. There’s something passionate in this that I can’t shake. David was a visionary for the central part of God, the part that makes Him tick and from which everything flows. One of the ways David expressed this was in a desire for God to have a permanent place to call ‘home.’

The Song From Above The Sun

Two of the books that Solomon wrote, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs, seem to be as vastly different as the sun is from the earth.  Did Solomon write the Song in the thralls of “first love,” and Ecclesiastes later after falling away?  Or did he find true love later in life after …
