An Odoriferous Intro to Song 1:12-14

Pic of girl smelling a flowerA sweet thing happened when the Shulamite followed the King’s instructions. And an unexpected thing, when she went on that brave journey to find him. What else, but that she got gushed over! And adorned with thoughtful gifts!

But that’s just like Jesus, is it not, from your experience? He sees all the brave little things we do, because we are in love with Him. The small, the insignificant, the silly … all of them are precious. And He likes to acknowledge these things.

For God is just, and he will not forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name… ~ Hebrews 6:10

It’s then – upon this blessed attention – that the Bride became aware of something. Maybe for the first time, she realized that she can be pleasing to her lover! And he desired her! Not because of her goodness, per say, but because she was not being shy about her thirsty ache for him.

Have you ever had the awareness enter YOU by faith ―that YOU are the object of God’s loving desire? Do you intimately know the pleasure of these words, “Well done my loving companion, I am pleased with you?” Or are you still feeling insecure with this kind of amazing Love, that knows all of your weakness and failures (past, present, and future) and yet still finds endless reasons to adore you?

For the Shulamite, the revelation of her Beloved’s love causes her to be confident, not fearful! She declares:

While the king is reclining, my spikenard fills the room with its fragrance.
A bundle of myrrh is my beloved unto me, that lies all night between my breasts.
And my beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms in the vineyards of the Engedi oasis.
~ Song of Songs 1:12-14

In the next few posts, I plan to take each of these three parts and expound on them. Briefly though, it’s easy to understand:

  • The first statement is an awareness of her scent.
  • The second and third statement is an awareness of his scent.

But there are some rich visuals going on as well, that are delicious to bask in! Praying to digest some of it in divine time.

inLove!
